Unknown said...: Very interesting--by the way, the tactic of renaming towns in Oregon for the greater good continues to this day. Just above the Hell's Canyon area, practically due west of where we live there's the town of Halfway, Oregon; but a few years back it officially changed its name to Half.com as a promotion with some commercial website. Of course, everyone that I know (on this side of the border) still calls it Halfway.; 16 November 2009 at 07:37

Fat Dog to the Big Apple is, in part, an exercise in virtual reality and, in part, a pleasant but meaningless diversion. Bored with walking his slightly overweight Wheaten Terrier, Amy, around the same grey streets of West Yorkshire, even more overweight writer and blogger, Alan Burnett, decided to let his mind wander where his feet could not. The two therefore embarked - with the help of pedometers, interactive maps and all the information resources of the limitless World Wide Web - on a virtual reality journey from Los Angeles to New York.

Their daily walks on the streets around their home town of Huddersfield in the UK are plotted on a map and the Web allows them to sample all the sights and sounds of the real-time traveller. But, how rich is the web's information resource? Can this web-based resource support the virtual travellers on their entire epic journey or will the intrepid pair eventually wander into an information black hole? These are some of the questions the project is designed to address.
